Weekends were made for…

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

~Luke 6:45 (NIV)

Well, how was your weekend? Did the first weekend of the New Year prove to be a good one? Did you have fun, or did you just exist? Did you make it fruitful, or did it just come and go?

As I read this text, I thought a lot about our weekends. How we can sometimes allow the weekends to be a time of fun but end up messing up our hearts? The fun we see with our eyes or say with our mouths seems to work its way down into our hearts.

Now, if we are making the best of our weekends. Spending time with family, catching up on things around the house, maybe giving some of our time to serve others in Christ’s name, and gathering in worship can lead to good things being stored in our heart. Good things in a heart lead to a good man/woman.

But… If our weekend is full of trash, filth, laziness, selfishness, or many other things that are not good then our heart begins to be filled with wicked things. All of a sudden, we start to have wicked thoughts then begin to do wicked things.

As you start this new week off, begin to think about what you will you fill your heart with this? Guard your heart, fill it with good things, and begin to speak and act as a good man should.

Happy Monday everyone,

-James

  1. The great thing about being in recovery is that there are no more messy, obliterated, hungover, sad weekends. I have learned to try to feed my heart and spirit more than anything else, and try to always do the “next right thing” as they say in the rooms. It’s a good way to live. I wish more people had the opportunity to learn the things I’ve gotten to learn by being in a 12 step program. It really changes people for the better.

  2. My weekend free time was spent at home since I was utterly exhausted just from the three days back at work since the holiday. It was spent catching up on chores and getting the rest I need to function this week. I’m a little upset I didn’t make it to church, but sometimes our bodies force us to slow down for a reason lol

  3. Happy Monday James. It will be nice to have a full week of some kind of order. I’ve been so confused about what day it is for the past few weeks.
