Did you get something to eat yet sir?

Could be that we were in the last few days of No Shave November or that I usually wear Jean’s, a t shirt, and boots, I can’t be sure.

We were serving Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless mission a few days before Thanksgiving. I had been fixing plates, walking around, and talking to the guests for over an hour when I stepped outside for a minute.

Upon my return, a fellow volunteer looked me in the eye, put her hand lovingly on my shoulder, and with a deep sense of concern and Christian love asked, “Did you get anything to eat yet, sir?”

My wife and kids, bless their hearts, have not stopped laughing since.

I have been thinking about this a lot since it happened and am wondering if God was giving me a lesson in humility.

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

  1. One of my favorite verses. Thanks for sharing this post. Many of us are just a paycheck or disaster away from finding ourselves homeless. It’s certainly humbling when you spend time with guys who have lost everything materially yet maintain joy spiritually.
