Is there evidence for evolution?

I have been having a discussion for the past few days about evidence that supports the theory that all life on Earth has evolved from single celled organisms to what exists today. So, being the fair and objective person I am, I googled the evidence and, here is some of it.

1. The universal genetic code.

All cells on Earth, from our white blood cells, to simple bacteria, to cells in the leaves of trees, are capable of reading any piece of DNA from any life form on Earth. This is very strong evidence for a common ancestor from which all life descended.

2. The fossil record.

The fossil record shows that the simplest fossils will be found in the oldest rocks, and it can also show a smooth and gradual transition from one form of life to another.

Please watch this video for an excellent demonstration of fossils transitioning from simple life to complex vertebrates.

3. Genetic commonalities.

Human beings have approximately 96% of genes in common with chimpanzees, about 90% of genes in common with cats (source), 80% with cows (source), 75% with mice (source), and so on. This does not prove that we evolved from chimpanzees or cats, though, only that we shared a common ancestor in the past. And the amount of difference between our genomes corresponds to how long ago our genetic lines diverged.

4. Common traits in embryos.

Humans, dogs, snakes, fish, monkeys, eels (and many more life forms) are all considered “chordates” because we belong to the phylum Chordata. One of the features of this phylum is that, as embryos, all these life forms have gill slits, tails, and specific anatomical structures involving the spine. For humans (and other non-fish) the gill slits reform into the bones of the ear and jaw at a later stage in development. But, initially, all chordate embryos strongly resemble each other.

In fact, pig embryos are often dissected in biology classes because of how similar they look to human embryos. These common characteristics could only be possible if all members of the phylum Chordata descended from a common ancestor.

5. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Bacteria colonies can only build up a resistance to antibiotics through evolution. It is important to note that in every colony of bacteria, there are a tiny few individuals which are naturally resistant to certain antibiotics. This is because of the random nature of mutations.

When an antibiotic is applied, the initial inoculation will kill most bacteria, leaving behind only those few cells which happen to have the mutations necessary to resist the antibiotics. In subsequent generations, the resistant bacteria reproduce, forming a new colony where every member is resistant to the antibiotic. This is natural selection in action. The antibiotic is “selecting” for organisms which are resistant, and killing any that are not.

So, is my mind blown? Am I ready to reject creationism and fully embrace evolution based on overwhelming evidence? Nope, and here’s why.

While there is most certainly what qualifies as evidence in every sense of the word, the evidence fails to convince me that a completely random and unguided transition from microbes to man has occurred via any mechanism that science can begin to adequately understand without huge amounts of extrapolations, endless unexplainable possibilities, and infinite time.

The fact here is, while evidence to support godless naturalistic theories regarding our origins does exist, there is, and will always be, much about the universe that natural sciences cannot fully explain.

Think of this what you will and believe whatever you want but you cannot rationally or scientifically divorce the supernatural from the observable universe, which leads me to believe, without doubt, that; “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

  1. I’m with you on that one. All except the fossil record could equally be explained by everything having a common creator or designer rather than a common ancestor. As for the fossil record we should be knee deep in missing links etc. (particularly due to the suppose billions of years needed for separate species to emerge). I was once an avid follower of evolution (I’d never heard of anyone thinking otherwise). When I became a christian it was a question God answered by having me work for an author who “just happened” to be writing a book on creation science.
I think now it is a bit like the story of the emperor’s new clothes, anyone with an ounce of common sense can see it just doesn’t add up, but few think to question it for fear of being thought dumb.

  2. This same evidence can be interpreted to be solidly in favor of Biblical creation:

    1. Universal Genetic Code – This proves that there was only One almighty Creator. Secondly, this Creator revealed in Genesis 1:28 that all life forms were to consume the same self-replicating food source for sustenance. If everything had unique genetic code, then every kind of creature would only be able to consume its fellow kind for sustenance. Good design.

    2. The Fossil record – Fossils only really make sense in light of the global flood as recorded in Genesis 7-9. Fossils only form in very specific conditions…flood conditions.

    3. Genetic Commonalities – Common designer. Humans are unique though in that we have been created in the image of God. In Genesis 2, God brought all of the creatures before Adam and even though there were similarities, Adam saw that there were none like him, so God made Eve.

    4. Common Traits in Embryos – Again common Designer. The spine is a good design, and the Creator used it over and over. We should expect spinal development to look very similar in different kinds, not because they come from the same ancestor, but because the Creator used the similar body plan. Gill slits? This has been refuted quite often.

    5. Bacterial resistance to Antibiotics – mutant bacteria can resist antibiotics, and then only the mutants are around to reproduce.

That is why it is so important for us as Christian apologists to analyze from a presuppositional mindset. Everyone has the SAME evidence. People interpret evidence according to their worldview. So which worldview best accounts for reality? Truth? Morality? Love? Beauty? Mathematics? Logic? Reason? Immaterial, unchanging, universal absolutes?

Only the Christian worldview can account for reality. Worldviews that rely on evolution are impotent.

  3. As you said before James…. Without doubt “In the beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth.”

I became an Atheist in my head for almost 30 years after being deceived that I evolved from an Ape and the Bible and Jesus were just made up, before this Jesus was my Best Friend but now I have no doubts of God’s reality or of His Creation and how it was Created.

If we don’t believe Scripture which God tells us is all inspired by Him, we are calling Him a liar. There are many Christian Scientists who confirm that we were Created and that we could not have evolved. I don’t read Satan’s lies propagated by Secular Scientists, it’s foolishness to do so.

1 Corinthians 15:38-40 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased Him, and to every seed his own body All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kind of flesh of Men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds..(KJV)

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood (KJV)

Of course there are similarities between Mankind and Animals we have the same Creator but God states very clearly in the Scripture above that we do not have the same D.N.A which He had man record over 2,000 years ago. We now know this to be True because you cannot transfuse Animal blood for Humans or the other way around regardless of how close the DNA is, the link below explains why in detail also current dating methods have proven the earth is young but so does the 6 days of Creation in Genesis they show clearly we did not evolve.

    • If we don’t believe Scripture we are calling God a liar is absolutely right Anne.

I believe the secular world teaches that doubt is a healthy and noble thing and, sometimes that may be the case. But when it comes to the Word of God, doubt is all bad, sinful even.

Bible clearly holds us accountable for our own doubts. When Zechariah was visited by the angel of the Lord and told that he would have a son (Luke 1:11-17), he doubted the word given to him. He logically assumed that he and his wife were too old to have children, and in response to his doubt, the angel said he would be mute until the day God’s promise was fulfilled (Luke 1:18-20). Zechariah doubted God’s ability to overcome natural obstacles – many people today share the same doubt. Any time we allow human reason to overshadow faith in God, sinful doubt is the result. No matter how logical our reasons may seem, God has made foolish the wisdom of the world (1 Corinthians 1:20), and His seemingly foolish plans are far wiser than man’s. Faith is trusting God even when His plan goes against human reason or experience.

Thanks for reading and commenting, God bless 🙂

      • Thank you James your response to me is full of Truth, having been in a Ministry to Atheists and I’m still reaching out to them when motivated to do so, I believe very much in giving them Godly doubts, it was what caused me to rethink the lies I had been told and yes they just did not add up to reality. There are some Atheists we can reach but some we can’t as the Scripture below confirms but we do need to be careful we don’t accept their worldly focus, yes Satan’s’ lies.

Proverbs 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly lest thou also be like unto him.

Proverbs 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly lest he be wise in his own conceit.

I was deceived James as a young Teenager by my Teacher and my Mother who had just Adopted me, both were aggro Atheists. I was told that my Sunday School teacher had lied to me about Jesus and God, that they were not real, many years later I met her again when I started going to Church and she told me she had never stopped praying for me…….. God is so Good.

Thanks again James, Blessings – Anne.

        • Anne,

I am sorry you were lied to as a child but praise God for your Sunday school teacher and her persistent prayers. Interesting also you were lied to when most atheists I talk to absolutely hate indoctrination and telling kids what to believe.

I know some atheists can never be reached but I have a hard time sometimes giving up on people 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and for your encouraging words.
