You are more likely to die getting punched in the face than you are to be murdered with an assault rifle

Obviously we need to ban fists and hammers.

According to the FBI there were a total of 625 murders committed with rifles and shotguns in 2012. That breaks down to 322 murders that were rifle related and 303 that were shotgun related.

The total number of deaths committed with fists, hammers, and other blunt objects was 1,196. That breaks down to 518 murders related to hammers and blunt objects and 678 related to fists.

Taken together, the rate of murder by fists and hammers was nearly 100 percent higher than the rate of murder by rifles or shotguns.

  1. How about all the other firearms: 8,855 homicides by firearms isn’t a number I’d like to compare to fists and hammers.

  4. I congratulate you on searching for some truth and showing the reasoning behind the statement: ‘more people are killed by a punch in the face than an assault rifle’.

I’m somewhat saddened however by the flaw in your analysis.

There are 110 murders listed as ‘other weapons’ and 1147 listed as ‘not stated’! So we don’t actually know how many were committed by Assault rifles or automatics or semi-automatics, none of which i believe have any right being in the hands of non-military personnel.

The other flaw of course is in comparing the two stats as somehow having any kind of equality.

An earlier poster claimed there are 300 million guns in America (though thankfully not 300 million gun-owners) Just how many of them actually have their loaded gun in their hand every time someone annoys them enough that they feel like punching them or worse? Then how many of us are carrying our hands with us in a similar situation? The stat is heavily weighted against the non-gun possessing person.

    Nice try – have a re-think. 😉

    Love.
